BANNED BOOK CLUB: The Giver

The Banned Book & Audiobook Club date is 6 pm on Thursday, January 25.

Join us at the Library and on Zoom. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Copies of the book are available at the library and also on Libby. If you prefer to listen to the audiobook, you may also loan a copy from Libby. Not sure how? Ask Ann!

Our book pick is The Giver by Lois Lowry.

The Giver – and Gathering Blue, and the newest in the trilogy, Messenger – take place against the background of very different cultures and times. Though all three are broader in scope than my earlier books, they nonetheless speak to the same concern: the vital need of people to be aware of their interdependence, not only with each other but with the world and its environment.”
~ Author Lois Lawry

What is the Banned Book Club?

This club is designed for students grades 7-12 (and friends and families!). We will listen (or read) a different banned/challenged book each month and meet to discuss, eat snacks, and socialize. There will be two adult supervisors to help facilitate, Clifford Anderson and Mere Doyen.

Why?

By exploring books that have been banned/challenged, participants will gain insights into societal norms, freedom of speech, and censorship across different periods of American history. Plus, these are GREAT books!

This club will have a monthly gathering at the Library and on Zoom. It is open to people on AND off-island.
Please reach out to us at librarian@filibrary.org for the Zoom link

Dates will be posted on our social media and emails to your inbox. Keep an eye out!
